1–2 days · Bernkastel-Kues base · bus arrival; avoid the castle climb if needed

Arrive with a plan

Bernkastel-Kues has no station in its centre. The destination office identifies Wittlich or Traben-Trarbach as rail gateways and links VRT for onward buses. Compare the full journey before choosing a train; taxis are also listed by the office.

Get back comfortably

Plan the return to your chosen rail gateway with VRT, or reserve a taxi at an agreed address. Guest-ticket benefits depend on participating accommodation and the current conditions; do not assume every stay includes transport.

What to budget

€20 per adult for Dr. Loosen’s five-wine appointment. The separate seasonal Vinothek tasting is €35: €55 if you choose both across the two days.

Meals, buses or taxis, castle transport and accommodation are additional. Dr. Loosen’s appointment is a tasting, not a cellar or vineyard tour.

Price evidence checked 2026-10-10. Confirm the current total for your date.

Choose the day that fits you

The climb to Landshut is steep. The town, Dr. Loosen premises and the Vinothek have not been verified together as a step-free route.

A gentler option: Stay by the river and old town instead of climbing to the castle. Ask about a suitable vehicle to the tasting and the venue’s seating and entrance. Only add the castle if the transport provider and destination confirm the route meets your needs.

The day plan

Bernkastel’s old town and Landshut Castle sit on one riverbank; Kues and the St. Nikolaus Hospital Vinothek are across the bridge. Start with the castle view, then keep a confirmed Dr. Loosen tasting as the day’s anchor. The castle approach is steep, so arrange transport if the climb does not suit you. Add the Vinothek on another morning within its seasonal tasting hours.

Views before the tasting

Suggested allowances. If your tasting is in the morning, move the castle visit to another day or use arranged castle transport; do not hurry down wet paths to keep an appointment.

  1. Morning, fair weather

    Landshut Castle

    Allow 90 minutes including a town-based walk

Climb towards the ruins for a view of the river and the town's setting. The tourism office also lists a castle express and car access. Choose the approach that suits you; the grounds have a barrier-free circular route, while the hill walk is a different proposition.

Return to town for a separate lunch; allow at least 90 minutes to eat without a tasting deadline.

  2. Booked afternoon

    Dr. Loosen

Allow approximately 60–90 minutes; confirm your appointment

A seated, producer-focused tasting gives the day its wine anchor. The regular format lists five selected-by-you wines. Ask for a small, coherent comparison, and expect a tasting rather than a tour through working cellars or steep vineyards.

Prearrange the return if walking is unsuitable. Keep the rest of the afternoon for Bernkastel's streets and riverfront.

Optional next morning: a regional comparison

Use this instead of adding another tasting to the first afternoon. Available only within the operator's tasting season and confirmed hours.

  1. Late morning, seasonal

    St. Nikolaus Hospital Vinothek

    Allow approximately 90 minutes

Cross to Kues for a regional selection in the vaulted cellars. The operator advertises more than 100 wines; choose a few with staff guidance rather than making quantity the day's purpose. The adjoining former museum experience is closed.

Reserve time for lunch and the confirmed onward bus, taxi or train connection.

Viewpoint and historic ruins

Landshut Castle

The castle viewpoint explains the town’s relationship to the river and steep vineyards; it remains optional because the climb is a real physical commitment.

Cost

Check current tower, guided-tour and castle-express charges separately.

Booking

Grounds, guided tours, restaurant and castle transport are different offers; check what you need.

Access
Tourism office states a barrier-free circular route on the grounds. The town-to-castle walk is steep.

Appointment tasting

Weingut Dr. Loosen

A small, booked Riesling comparison is a clear anchor for an enthusiast. Its value is the tasting itself, so we do not dress it up as an estate tour.

Cost

Regular five-wine tasting €20 per person; different group format €30 with separate conditions.

Booking

By appointment only, Monday–Saturday in peak season; closed Sunday/public holidays. No vineyard or cellar tours.

Regional tasting room

Vinothek at St. Nikolaus Hospital

The separate seasonal tasting offers broader Mosel comparison on another morning. It is an alternative subject and appointment, not a visit to the closed wine museum.

Cost

Operator publishes €35 per person for the seasonal tasting.

Booking

Check and reserve the dated tasting through the operator; March–October tasting window currently 10:00–15:00. Former multimedia museum permanently closed.

Access
Ask the operator about cellar access and any seating or assistance needs.

Travel details

One full day and preferably a night; a second day suits the separate regional Vinothek option.

When to go

Monday–Saturday for a confirmed Dr. Loosen appointment; it closes Sundays and public holidays. The regional Vinothek's tastings are currently seasonal, 2 March–31 October, 10:00–15:00. A shop being open later does not mean a tasting starts then.

Getting here

The town tourism office identifies Wittlich and Traben-Trarbach as nearby railway stations. Check the onward bus or prearrange a transfer to Bernkastel-Kues, including your return. Do not book a tasting appointment using only the train's arrival time at Wittlich.

Moving between stops

Walk the town and bridge where suitable. Landshut’s approach climbs steeply; consider arranged castle transport. Confirm the pedestrian route and entrance for Dr. Loosen or book a taxi. Allow approximately 20–30 minutes from central Bernkastel, adjusting for your chosen route.

What to budget

Dr. Loosen lists a regular five-wine tasting at €20 per person, by appointment, without a minimum group size. The St. Nikolaus Vinothek publishes €35 for its seasonal tasting. These are separate experiences; add meals, transfers and any castle transport.

If the day changes

Rain or icy paths

Drop the hill climb and keep a town meal plus the confirmed indoor tasting. The optional Vinothek only replaces outdoor time when its seasonal tasting service is running.

Want a vineyard walk?

Ask tourism staff for a current marked route suited to the weather and your fitness. A vineyard name on a label does not imply public access.

In your glass

Riesling has more than one setting.

A Mosel tasting can range from dry wines to wines with noticeable sweetness. Tell the host what you enjoy and ask to compare styles; the label's unfamiliar words need not become a test.

Ask your host: “Could we compare a dry and an off-dry Riesling and talk about how the acidity changes the impression?”
