Arrive with a plan

Arrive at Bordeaux Saint-Jean, then plan the connection to your accommodation or first stop with TBM. Enter the actual addresses; the planner can compare less walking and accessible journeys. La Cité du Vin is served by tram B, but the complete station connection depends on your route.

Get back comfortably

Check the last useful service back to Saint-Jean or your hotel before settling into the CIVB bar. Save the route and any disruption notice. A city transit plan is sufficient for this guide; a Médoc or Saint-Émilion trip is a separate day.

What to budget

€23 per adult for La Cité’s permanent exhibition and included Belvédère drink. The optional Musée du Vin et du Négoce is €12 instead of, or in addition to, that visit.

Budget separately for meals, the CIVB bar, local transport and accommodation. Choosing both museums makes the listed admission subtotal €35.

Price evidence checked 2026-10-10. Confirm the current total for your date.

Choose the day that fits you

TBM offers accessibility planning, and La Cité has an adapted visitor offer. The full quay walk and all bar or museum routes have not been verified as one continuous accessible itinerary.

A gentler option: Shorten the quays to a chosen riverside stretch, use public transport between areas and ask La Cité about its seated Comfort route. Keep one museum and one seated break; check the exact transit stops and venue entrances.

The day plan

Begin with the city’s wine trade: walk a stretch of the Garonne, head north to La Cité du Vin in Bacalan and finish at Le Bar à Vin near the centre. Walking and city transport suit this route. Saint-Émilion and the Médoc need a separate day with their own château appointments and transport; choose one if you extend the trip.

The Garonne, Bacalan and the centre

Suggested order and time allowances, to adjust around the weather and a real museum ticket. Lunch is deliberately left as a flexible meal break.

  1. 10:00 suggested

    The Garonne riverfront

    Allow 60–90 minutes

Walk a manageable part of the quays and notice the city around the wine trade. Turn towards Chartrons if it fits your route, then stop for lunch before the museum. There is no prize for completing every historical plaque.

Use current city directions or the tourism office’s wine-history map. Allow time for lunch and the journey to La Cité.

  2. 13:30 suggested

    La Cité du Vin

2–3 hours, published typical exhibition visit

Choose a few exhibition themes rather than treating every module as compulsory. Leave time for the Belvédère view, included with the relevant ticket. Grape juice is an option if you prefer to keep tasting for the evening.

Return towards the centre by tram or your chosen route, leaving a buffer before the bar stop.

  3. Early evening suggested

Le Bar à Vin du CIVB

    Allow 45–60 minutes

Use the varied Bordeaux selection to try something beyond the red you already recognise. Ask for guidance, then make dinner a separate decision. Check service hours and current prices before relying on this final stop.

Choose dinner near your accommodation rather than adding an unnecessary cross-city journey.

City walk

Garonne riverfront — Bordeaux quays

The riverfront explains Bordeaux’s trading-city character before the museum; it also offers a flexible stop for companions who want the city rather than a tasting circuit.

Cost

No ticket assumed for an ordinary public riverside walk.

Booking

Use Bordeaux tourism’s official wine-history route if you want a fuller self-guided walk; guided experiences are separate bookings.

Museum and viewpoint

La Cité du Vin

A broad, structured wine introduction makes this a useful first-day anchor, with enough context for someone new to wine regions.

Dated permanent exhibition + one Belvédère drink: €23 adult published when checked. Other tickets cost differently.

Booking

Book the intended product and date via the official site. Check seasonal hours and holiday closures; workshops are not automatically included.

Alternative museum

Musée du Vin et du Négoce

Cost

Self-guided adult visit €12 when checked; includes two wines, with alternatives and reduced rates described by the operator.

Booking

Use its own visit page for the current ticket and opening information. Consider it in place of La Cité if a shorter visit suits you.

Travel details

Suggested: one city day; stay 2–3 nights if adding a countryside excursion.

When to go

Choose a date when your selected Cité du Vin ticket and evening stop work together. The Cité publishes seasonal hours and holiday exceptions. Keep the river walk flexible for weather rather than making a timed museum admission depend on a perfect morning.

Getting here

Arrive at Bordeaux Saint-Jean by rail where practical and use the city network for the onward journey. La Cité identifies tram line B, stop La Cité du Vin, as its nearest tram access. Check the current journey from your accommodation.

Moving between stops

Walk the centre and riverfront, then use public transport for the longer stretch to Bacalan if needed. The tourism office’s wine-history walk links the CIVB area and La Cité; use its current route information to choose your stretch.

What to budget

The Cité’s dated permanent-exhibition ticket with one Belvédère drink is published at €23. The optional Musée du Vin et du Négoce self-guided visit is €12 adult. Meals, city transport and bar purchases are additional; compare ticket inclusions before paying.

If the day changes

A smaller museum day

Replace La Cité with the Musée du Vin et du Négoce and stay around Chartrons. The shorter published visit leaves more time for shops, lunch and the river.

Add the countryside tomorrow

Choose one vineyard area and a tour with explicit pickup, visit and lunch inclusions. Do not try to fit Médoc and Saint-Émilion around the city plan.

In your glass

Bordeaux has more than one colour.

The CIVB bar’s selection includes dry and sweet whites, rosé, clairet and sparkling wine as well as red. Use one glass to widen the trip, rather than turning the evening into a classification exam.

Ask your host: “What would you pour to show a side of Bordeaux I might not expect?”
