Arrive with a plan

Use Saumur station for this plan. The tourist office lists Ogalo links between the station, centre, château and Saint-Hilaire-Saint-Florent cellar area. Check your date: summer tourist buses and on-demand services are not interchangeable. For Fontevraud, request a taxi quote with the return included.

Get back comfortably

Arrange Fontevraud collection before entering the Abbey and allow time back to Saumur for your train. The tourist-office FAQ warns of Sunday limits on local services; verify the current timetable rather than assuming the weekday itinerary operates every day.

What to budget

€22.50 per adult for Saumur château €9.50 + Fontevraud Abbey €13 during 5 October–31 December 2026.

Bouvet’s chosen visit, meals, local transport and the Fontevraud transfer are unpriced. The Abbey ticket is not automatically an art-museum or tasting ticket.

Price evidence checked 2026-10-10. Confirm the current total for your date.

Choose the day that fits you

The château has stairs. Bouvet describes its classic cellar visit as accessible but it still involves approximately 500 metres in cool cellars. Taxi Foucher lists an adapted vehicle by reservation; availability and capacity need confirmation.

A gentler option: Skip the château interior if stairs are unsuitable, keep a riverside or café stop, and ask Bouvet about the route length and seating. Make Fontevraud a separate, prearranged visit with the Abbey’s access team and an appropriate vehicle.

The day plan

Keep this Loire visit around Saumur. Spend the first day between the château above town and Bouvet-Ladubay’s cellars at Saint-Hilaire-Saint-Florent, then travel separately to Fontevraud Abbey the following morning. A Saumur base works for both days, provided you confirm rural transfers or current buses. Check the château, cellar and Abbey calendars together before choosing dates.

Day 1 — Saumur above and below ground

A château morning and one booked cellar visit, with lunch and the town in between. Times are suggested allowances.

  1. 10:00 suggested

    Château de Saumur

    1 hour 30 minutes, published self-guided visit

Take in the château and the view over the Loire before returning to town. The site’s collections give the morning more substance than a photograph from the car park. Keep extra time for the approach and any guided element you add.

Allow a meal break and the journey to Saint-Hilaire-Saint-Florent; confirm the bus or transfer rather than relying on a short walking estimate.

  2. 14:30, subject to booking

    Bouvet-Ladubay

Allow 90 minutes overall; selected tour sets the length

Choose one of the operator’s cellar visits through the local tuffeau stone. The cellar is cool year-round, so bring a layer. Leave the rest of the afternoon free for the town or river rather than immediately adding another tasting.

Use your arranged return transport. Recheck weekend and seasonal services before setting out.

Day 2 — Give Fontevraud a morning

Keep this separate from the tasting day so the buildings, village and lunch have space.

  1. 10:30 suggested

    Abbaye royale de Fontevraud

Allow 3 hours, the site's recommended visit time

Spend the morning with the abbey church, cloister and historic spaces, then find lunch without rushing back for another winery. Museum admission and opening are separate questions. The Abbey alone is a worthwhile reason for this second day.

Book or check the return to Saumur before arriving; leave a buffer between the visit and any onward train.

Places & booking

Château and museum

Château de Saumur

The hilltop château introduces Saumur’s position on the Loire and gives the first morning a strong sense of place.

Cost

€9.50 adult published when checked; special visits and concessions differ.

Booking

Individual visitors currently need no timed slot. Seasonal opening and an annual early-year closure apply; last entry is 30 minutes before closing.

Address
Esplanade Hubert Landais, 49400 Saumur
Time here
1 hour 30 minutes self-guided, per the venue
Access
The venue says the main courtyard and floors are reached only by stairs. Contact it before planning a visit with mobility requirements.

Cellar visit

Bouvet-Ladubay historic cellars

Historic sparkling-wine cellars link the town’s stone and wine industries; they offer a different subject from the château rather than repeating it.

Cost

Check the current price for the exact tour selected.

Booking

Booking required according to the operator. Confirm language, format and current opening; Sunday and holiday exceptions apply.

Address
Saint-Hilaire-Saint-Florent, Saumur; confirm the booked tour entrance
Time here
Allow 90 minutes overall; confirm your selected tour length
Access
Only the classic tour is described as accessible for reduced mobility. The operator gives a roughly 500-metre route and 12°C cellars; confirm suitability directly.

Heritage visit

Abbaye royale de Fontevraud

The Abbey deserves its own morning for architecture and history. Moving it to day two prevents a rural transfer from turning the cellar day into a race.

Cost

Abbey full adult price €13 for the published 5 October–31 December 2026 period; check your date and product.

Booking

Check seasonal hours, admission cut-off and current closures. The French page announces the Modern Art Museum closed 5–30 October 2026, a notice absent from the English page when checked.

Address
Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, 49590; use official visitor parking and entrance directions
Time here
Allow 3 hours, per official French practical information
Access
The Abbey is partially accessible for reduced mobility; the museum is described as accessible. Wheelchair loan needs advance arrangement.

Travel details

Suggested: 2 days and 2 nights around Saumur; the second day includes a half-day abbey visit.

When to go

Check all three calendars together. Saumur château is generally Tuesday–Sunday outside July and August, with seasonal exceptions. Bouvet has Sunday and holiday closures during parts of the year. Fontevraud follows a different winter timetable.

Getting here

Use Saumur station for a rail-based arrival and check the current TER connection from your starting city. The château publishes links towards Angers, Tours and Nantes, plus an urban bus connection. Arrange luggage and accommodation before a timed cellar visit rather than expecting to carry bags through every attraction.

Moving between stops

Walk the town where suitable, checking the uphill château approach. Use current Ogalo services or booked transfers for the cellar and Fontevraud. Confirm outward and return times, particularly on weekends. A car with a non-drinking driver offers flexibility but is not required for every part of the trip.

What to budget

Saumur château publishes €9.50 adult admission. Fontevraud’s French page lists €13 adult Abbey admission for 5 October–31 December 2026; other products cost extra. Add your selected Bouvet tour, meals and transfers.

If the day changes

Only one day available

Stay with Saumur château, lunch and the confirmed cellar visit. Fontevraud can be a future trip rather than an exhausted last entry.

Cellar or château does not suit your access needs

Contact the venue before buying. A different tour format or a town-and-river day may work better; do not assume an adapted visit from a generic tourism badge.

In your glass

One valley, more than one style.

Let the cellar explain the wine actually made there. This route starts in Saumur; it does not stand in for Sancerre, Vouvray or every other Loire area.

Ask your host: “What should I notice about this sparkling wine, and which local still wine would you compare it with?”
